WELCOME BACK A DAY!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Be sure to join us on Google Meet during our designated class period.

Today's Activity: We're kicking off a new unit; John Knowles' classic, A Separate Peace. It is the story of Gene Forrester, who visits his old boarding school 15ish years after graduating, and thinks back to his time there when he was 16. This book is truly a coming of age story where one realizes that sometimes you keep your friends close, but your enemies closer. :-)

To kick off the week, I have a Presentation on the author John Knowles and the historical context behind the novel.

This whole unit is designed to build a routine we can use for the rest of the year, and I'm here to help keep you on schedule, encourage best practices, and drive home good habits, especially in a virtual school world.

That being said, you will be asked to read assigned chapters for homework. Yes, you have to read for homework! I am putting a lot of trust in your ability to do the novel readings for homework and be responsible with it. We'll be having short chapter quizzes at the start of every class to make sure we are staying on top of the readings. They will probably be easy if you've read the chapters and make no sense if you didn't. While I know this sounds like a lot, it's imperative that we are able to move through the book collectively at the same time. I know the temptation there, especially while at home, to cut corners and take the easy path. However, I believe your enjoyment of the book, your enjoyment of my class, and the pride of accomplishment in starting and finishing a book are much better in the long run than faking your way through just to get a grade.

You will also be given access to the novel in 2 forms, Ebook and PDF. Make sure you download a copy of the PDF to your devices to have as a backup.Connection issues should not be an excuse for not completing the readings.

Homework: Begin reading A Separate Peace, Chapters 1-3. An optional assignment is to keep a dialectical journal.
