We're coming down to the tail end of our Chaucer Unit- rounding out with something that he was very talented at...descriptive writing!
The purpose of this activity is to focus on tone and descriptive language. Tone is the feeling that comes across from writing to the reader. Descriptive language is vividly stating in words the characteristics and appearance of a person or situation. It gives an accurate account, only in words. The benefit to this type of writing is that it paints accurate pictures through writing from your mind to the reader's mind. Transfer a message the way you intended (your power!), get higher scores on the PSAT and SAT!
A fantastic book, Marlo Thomas' "The Right Words at the Right Time" is a superb example of descriptive writing! We will utilize excerpts from her book as mentors to frame our own writing.
The best advice I can give you about this is to SHOW me, don't TELL me!
Now that we've finished our Canterbury Tales unit, we will be working on a group project; developing a magazine around the stories we've covered. (If you're curious, you can goto the Handouts page and check the assignment out!) Don't worry, I'll go over how to write an effective news article and explain exactly what the project entails. I'm going to give you 3 days of class time this week to work on the projects AND you will all have the chance to work on the netbooks. Please bring your flashdrives/activate a google docs account- if you don't have one yet, try to get one!
The Wife of Bath's Tale asks the age old question....What do women want?
Apparently men have been asking for centuries and surprisingly enough the answers have not been all that different!
A quick Google searched turned up these results:
In preparation for this week, I asked my husband this very question. Without hesitation, he said, "Well I know what you want....Shoes and lots of them!" Boy does he know me well. :-)
Please keep in mind that our final vocab quiz will be happening on Wednesday. Your novel vocab- sentences & definitions in their entirety are due on Friday December 6th.
Hope you all had a GREAT Thanksgiving!
P.S. Let's get married this week!
