In the religions of Hinduism and Buddhism, Karma is believed to be the sum of a person's actions in this and previous states of existence, as well as the deciding factor of future existences. In a nut shell, Karma is simply this Cause and Effect. It is the idea that every action we have and make sets into motion a cause. These causes have their effects, which make out lives, for good or ill.
Now Karma is going to come into some SERIOUS play this week! Recall the character of Mrs. Joe.. A large, menacing woman, Mrs. Joe prides herself on raising Pip "by hand," which is a sorry pun on the way she is hitting the child and her husband whenever she is not verbally attacking them. Her favorite instrument, "The Tickler," is a stick that is "worn smooth" from caning Pip, regardless of his behavior. The bodice of her apron is stuck through with pins and needles, a true metaphor for her character. Casting such horrid behavior upon those around her has Mrs. Joe has earned herself a VIP seat in the world of Karma!
We will be finishing up Part 1 of the book this week- that means TEST on Monday! Be sure to obtain ALL handouts from the homework bins to ensure you have every resource to study from! Honors, keep in mind, your study guide on Part 1 will be due (completed!) on Monday as well.
